Stacy Merrill Surla

Stacy Surla helps teams design and deliver products and services that work across digital and traditional channels. She integrates user-centered methods – including design thinking, Lean UX, and Agile practices – that put the user at the heart of each effort. Ms. Surla developed an iterative, team-based framework for the rapid design and launch of products, systems, and services, and has applied it in nearly 20 engagements over the past 3 years. This approach enables clients to build innovative teams that work creatively and effectively to deliver cost-effective, high quality outcomes that solve material problems and get adopted by end users. As a result, clients are able to deliver excellent outcomes for their customers, staff, and stakeholders.

Her career spans more than 30 years, with a concentration on bringing about human-centered transformation in not-for-profit and government settings. Clients have included associations, state offices, and federal agencies including the Departments of Agriculture, Justice, Veterans Affairs, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and the White House.

Ms. Surla is an adjunct professor in User Experience and User Research at Kent State University’s graduate IA/KM program. She serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Information Architecture, and was a twice-elected officer on the Board of Directors of the IA Institute. She has made numerous public speaking, TV, and radio appearances on user experience and technical topics. She received an M.A. degree in Literature from the American University.
